2026 Weather Siren Press Release

WHAT’S THE SIREN?
Vernon County has several warning systems that can be rapidly activated during severe weather events. These systems are monitored by Vernon County Emergency Management, the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, and local police and fire agencies.
The most common warning devices in populated areas are community sirens. These sirens are activated when conditions indicate imminent danger, including but not limited to a tornado sighting. Severe thunderstorm hazards such as straight-line winds, microbursts, and downbursts can be just as dangerous as tornadoes. Sirens may also be used during hazardous materials incidents, flash flooding, or other life-threatening emergencies.
It is important to understand that siren effectiveness varies depending on factors such as wind direction, wind speed, siren placement, and whether a person is indoors or outdoors. Outdoor warning sirens are designed primarily to alert people who are outside. Residents are strongly encouraged to have multiple ways to receive alerts, such as Everbridge mass notifications and NOAA All-Hazards Weather Radio.
To ensure proper operation, community sirens are tested monthly from April through September. Tests are conducted on the first Monday of each month at 11:00 a.m. The only exception is September, when testing will occur on Tuesday, September 8. If inclement weather is present, testing will be postponed until the next suitable day. The first scheduled test will take place on Monday, April 6.
In addition, Wisconsin Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week is April 13–17. As part of this observance, statewide tornado drills will take place on Thursday, April 16, at 1:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m., during which outdoor sirens will be activated. These drills provide an excellent opportunity for individuals, schools, businesses, and families to practice moving to designated storm shelters. If severe weather is expected on April 16, the drills will be rescheduled for Friday, April 17.
